My name is Phill Langdon, I was born in Bristol in 1945, My interest in shipping started when I joined the tugs at Bristol and Avonmouth docks on leaving school. For many years I worked as a deckhand and engineer ,I moved from the tugs to sand dredgers mainly on the Harry Brown a sand dredger that worked the Bristol Channel for Twenty Eight years
I have painted ships for many years and find it is a subject I can relate to. I have many friends in the shipping and tug industry and find them a valuable source of information.
Bristol docks has a long and distinguished history of shipping. The replica of the Matthew and Brunels SS Great Britain the latter now in her old dock in the floating harbour carries on this tradition.
Painting pictures of old tugs and ships bring back good memories of an age gone by when Bristol was a working dock .
Many of the ships and tugs I have painted are no longer afloat so it is a pleasure to see them again through the photos people supply for me to use for my paintings.
